Hi Marcel, Please see attached acknowledgement. I did want to clarify what we mean when we checked the box that this request cannot be granted in its entirety. We, DEM, can provide you with the list of the potential shelters, no problem. However, for the second part of your request for the level of protection currently assessed for each facility, DEM does not maintain that record; those records I believe are maintained by the State of Hawaii Emergency Management Agency. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you. Mari Masuoka, Admin Specialist Department of Emergency Management City & County of Honolulu Tel: (808) 723-8959 Fax: (808) 768-1491

Hi Mari, Mahalo for your prompt reply - the list of shelter locations works fine for me - I'll follow up separately with HI-EMA on the assessments. aloha, Marcel

Dear Mr. Honore, Thank you for contacting the City and County of Honolulu Department of Emergency Management. For the first part of your request for the locations of City and County of Honolulu's potential hurricane evacuation shelter facilities, we are attaching a PDF of our most current list. While HI-EMA previously reported 127 facilities for Oahu, the list is dynamic and subject to change; we currently have 122 facilities on the potential hurricane evacuation shelter list. We will also be posting this list on our website shortly as well as an interactive map. The second part of your request was regarding the level of protection currently assessed at each of these facilities, ranging from tropical storm-strength winds to hurricane Category 5-strength winds. For O'ahu HI-EMA has previously published a table showing 24-buildings that meet current guidelines for category 1 hurricane and 1 building for category 3 hurricane for Oahu based on recent retrofits. We currently do not maintain any other rating data associated with storm categories for the remaining buildings. Instead, the buildings and rooms were previously assessed and determined to be usable with some risk. The City and County of Honolulu finds all of the hurricane evacuation shelters to be a safer option than remaining in areas prone to flooding or storm surge inundation, on exposed ridgelines or in older homes with wood frames or single wall construction. Thank you for your patience and we hope this email provides you with the information you requested. Please feel free to contact me should you have any further questions. Thank you, John John M.
