Aloha, My UIPA request "REQUIREMENTS FOR HAWAIIAN HAWK NEST SURVEY PRIOR TO CONSTRUCTION IN MARCH" (06/04/2020) was based on the former US FWS Hawaiian hawk nest survey requirements before construction in breeding season starting March each year. Does DFAW have a similar hawk nest survey immediately (10 days) prior to starting construction in March, for instance? Just want to understand impact on hawk of federal de-listing - does State provide similar protection of breeding hawks into the future? Mahalo, Sandra Demoruelle

Hi Sandra, Currently, the Hawaiian Hawk (ʻIo) is still listed under our State endangered species law, so yes, we continue to have provisions in our laws to protect the species. For consultations that we are engaged in that are for construction near areas we suspect could have hawks, we recommend surveying the area to ensure no ʻIo nests are present if trees are to be cut. ʻIo nests may be present during the breeding season from March to September.
