Aloha,
Pursuant to the public records law, I would like to request the following records in electronic format sent to my email address.
Under the Hawaii Open Records Law § 91-1 et seq., I am requesting an opportunity to obtain copies of public records that pertain to the Eric Thompson case (1CPC-22-0000500). I am aware that this case is under appeal. (CAAP-25-0000487). I am specifically requesting the police report with supplements, as well as audiovisual records including 911 calls, witness and suspect interviews, police worn bodycam, dashcam, and crime scene photos.
If there are any fees for searching or copying these records, please inform me if the cost will exceed $500. However, I would also like to request a waiver of all fees in that the disclosure of the requested information is in the public interest.
The Hawaii Open Records Law requires a response time within ten business days. If access to the records I am requesting will take longer than ten days, please contact me with information about when I might expect copies or the ability to inspect the requested records.
If you deny any or all of this request, please cite each specific exemption you feel justifies the refusal to release the information and notify me of the appeal procedures available to me under the law.
IF SEEKING PUBLIC INTEREST WAIVER, PROVIDE PUBLIC INTEREST STATEMENT BELOW THIS LINE
Local and national outlets have already reported extensively on the Thompson case (e.g., Hawaii News Now, Star-Advertiser).
Releasing records provides continuity and accuracy, ensuring that reporting is based on primary sources rather than incomplete or secondhand information.
Why it matters:
Other homicide cases in Hawaiʻi have had records released once concluded. Withholding in this case would be inconsistent and potentially discriminatory.
Mahalo,
Alaina Thomas
